The comics by Troy Chin are deeply psychological, and in many ways, can be seen as a cross sectional investigation into the mindset of the Singaporean psyche. Deciding to leave his job in the music business in New York and return home to Singapore, Troy’s comic strips are a way for him to seek personal reconciliation with his landscape, and as an avenue for him to a seek larger trajectory in his artistic expression.

From his hugely popular The Resident Tourist to his daily comic LOTI, his drawings are situated within an honest mental framework of someone who has been away from Singapore for about a decade and back. His ability to straddle between being an insider/outsider in Singapore allows him a unique lens that he skillfully employs to illuminate nuanced observations about his immediate landscape through his art. However way one might want to read into Troy’s comic expression, they are always honest, humorous, and emotionally engaging.

Commonpeople had the pleasure of speaking with Troy as he shares his experience, creative process, and joys of being a comic artist in Singapore.
